Julie Doiron Quidi Vidi Village Plantation, St. John's NL, May 7
Published May 08, 2016Julie Doiron is fucking hilarious. A record of her between-song spiels should come out someday because these stream-of-self-consciousness rambles are about as entertaining as any of her heartfelt songs.
Afforded 20 minutes for a music crawl set, Doiron told us (and mostly herself), she wouldn't be doing much talking, but then went on magnetic asides about gathering 18 song requests at a merch table in Vancouver once, or the pride/shame she felt about singing a song she wrote that gave her goosebumps.
Before a lovely "Dark Horse," she talked about Ennio Morricone soundtracks that make her cry and she ended her set with "Tailor," and all of us almost wept ourselves. This mix of confessional standup and musical performance remains a potent part of her character. Julie Doiron makes you laugh and she makes you cry.
