The bragging rights come via the data company Parrot Analytics [via Business Insider], which has revealed that Netflix's new show has taken the top spot across all platforms based on "demand expressions." This is defined as a standardized TV measurement unit to reflect the desire, engagement and viewership of a series, weighted by importance.
Based on the fantasy novel series — and spinoff videogame series — by the Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher arrived on Netflix on December 20, quickly becoming the top show in the world the week of December 22 to 28.
Yes, this means that The Witcher even sliced down Baby Yoda and The Mandalorian, the Star Wars spinoff series over on Disney+ that previously held the top spot, according to Parrot Analytics.
Besides being a worldwide hit, The Witcher stands as the top show in the U.S. with nearly 127 million demand expressions. In that same week of December 22 to 28, The Mandalorian earned 115 million.
Previous to The Mandalorian, the top spot on the Parrot Analytics chart was Netflix's Stranger Things, which stood as the most in-demand series in the U.S. for an impressive 21 weeks.
"The Witcher's immediate worldwide success highlights the impact that a binge-released series can have on driving audience demand," a Parrot Analytics representative said. "Its success is also crucial for Netflix heading into the 2020s as the streamer fights off new SVOD players and declining global digital original demand share."
According to Netflix's own number crunching, The Witcher is a hit as well. On Netflix's list of Overall Most Popular Releases of 2019, The Witcher came in at No. 6, and on the list of the Top 10 Most Popular Series Releases of 2019, the show took the No. 2 spot behind Stranger Things.
As previously reported, both critical and audience reaction to The Witcher has been mixed. But it seems Netflix definitely made the right move in already renewing the show for Season 2.
