Published Feb 09, 2017Alex Biro knows a thing or two about writing a tune. Whether as a member of the Boom Boom (now K.I.D.), delivering a beat for Trinidad James or co-writing with Crystalyne, the multi-instrumentalist's musical prowess is multifaceted. Now he's keeping a few of his hooks for himself in Selfish Things, and they've just delivered the lead single from their upcoming Vertical Love EP.
Entitled "8147 Mulholland Terrace," the James Paul Wisner-produced track is a far cry from his work with the aforementioned artists, but no doubt enabled by Biro's diverse writing style. An emo rollercoaster ride, the song starts with understated chords and a building beat beneath a distinct croon that's both sneering and sullen, then explodes into a gang vocal-led chorus, all topped off with an occasional falsetto flourish.
"'8147' ended up being a song for those who feel alone, or lost, or consumed in a sea of fallacy and Instagram feeds," Biro tells Exclaim! "A battle cry for the kids who were always awake to the perpetuated bullshit around them. A place where the misfits can rally."
Selfish Things will support the new cut with a single release show on February 11 at Adelaide Hall in Toronto, with the Vertical Love EP set to follow some time this spring.
