Published Oct 14, 2020In 2016, author J.D. Vance released his memoir Hillbilly Elegy — a book that some conservatives loved and others disliked, with Sarah Jones of The New Republic concluding that Vance was "the false prophet of Blue America." Whether or not the book's any good is for you to decide, but one thing's for sure — it makes for some excellent Oscar bait.
Where there is easy Academy Award potential, you will also find director Ron Howard, and he's here to lead always nominated but never winning actors Amy Adams and Glenn Close through a series of scenes that involve constant yelling and schmaltzy, swelling background music.
To be clear, this looks as much like an Oscar movie as it does a parody of an Oscar movie, but that's just the way these things go.
